D&D 5E Proposed Houserule: Warlock Spell Slots

If you look into tasha´s, the animate dead spell can be used once per day without using any slot. Probably they shoud update the old ones and remove the slot expenditure. An invocation and a slot is just too much. Maybe, just maybe you could pool them and say, you can´t use a different one, until they take a short rest... although at that point, They might just add a 3rd slot, which might be reserved for such spells...

My proposal is to give the Warlock an additional spell slot at level 5. That's pretty much it.

I'd also consider the possibility to making some of the spell invocations draw from a pool of daily castings, give them a fancy name like Sigils of Power, and say you have Sigils equal to your proficiency bonus and they recharge on a long rest, which would weaken some Invocations and strengthen others (those that spend a warlock spell slot to cast 1/day).

But mainly it's the extra slot at level 5 that I think the Warlock genuinely needs.

Thoughts?

Oh! Also, Variant Optional rule, make warlocks int based and give them prepared casting from known spells and they can learn more like wizards, but from the warlock spell list.
I don't think it's a problem honestly. The extra spell slot increases their power, sure, but not so much that it will take the spotlight from other players.

In one of the games I run I have a number of short rest players (monk, fighter, pugilist, warlock) so something I've done is make a short rest take only a minute, but limit it to 2 per day. It essentially allows them to take a short rest whenever they like without affecting the game too much. It seems to work well enough.

I also have some homebrew invocations for Pact of the Tome warlocks that provide extra spell slots. If you like I can PM them to you.

Sure!

There should definitely be some more invocations for pact of the Tome. I'm surprised that there still isn't an invocation to increase the number of spells known or to take a set of say three thematic spells and add them to spells known.

I agree. A couple of my invocations for Pact of Tome resemble a bard's Magical Secrets ability.

Thats 3 x 3rd level slots per short rest (9-12 over the course of the Adventuring day) at 5th level.

Why play anything else?

More likely 6. And it’s 2 more than before.

So let’s be less dramatic, and call it 1-3 more 3rd level slots per day at level 5.

So you’d play other classes for all the same reasons as before.
