Ahh, then I don't know. Sorry Ferret ! I kinda remember that the home editions didn't have the more complex security features and maybe Vista has done away with them. I always thought it odd that home users were denied security... Hopefully somebody with more Vista specific knowledge will post.

Not really... only got Vista for a short while myself. ;)

Here's an overview over the various Vista features broken down by Vista version...

I can't find anything on that list! Nothing to do with security, password, permission etc. So I'm going to have to wait for a vista expert :\

Right Click on the drive listed as ACERDATA (D: ) in the pic you posted earlier. On the first tab there is a section for File System. If that does not say NTFS you cannot set permissions at the file level.

Damn, It's FAT32. So it's no go on that.

When I've finished cleaning out my files I'll move the lot to folders where I can protect them.

There's no other way?

You can convert the FAT32 partition to NTFS. This is possible without reformatting or removing the files first. For example, to convert drive d:, type in the command prompt

convert D: /FS:NTFS

This is perfectly safe, I've done it countless of times and it always works as a charm. I have never heard anyone had any problems after conversion.

I'm no running XP. Like I said above I've got Vista, and to be more specific Vista Home Premium.

Thanks anyway guys!

Even after you convert your file system to NTFS, you may not be able to set file permissions since you have Vista Home Premium. I know that with XP home, many of the security features were disabled by default. I am not sure what Vista Home has to offer with regards to security options.

I don't plan on changing my file system! I'll go with my plan of just moving my stuff!
Honestly, I'd go ahead and convert to NTFS anyway. It's really odd to see a FAT32 Vista system, and there's no reason to keep it. NTFS is universally better.

Do you have any idea how it ended up like that? Did you put the system together?
