PS3 to be backwards compatible.

2005? Oh. I took it as it was coming out this Christmas or something.

As did I, but current media indicates 2005, maybe early 2005. Regardless, the 2004 holiday season is a long way off... things could change.

Sony will all be launching the PS3 in 2005, allegedly. In an effort to become more competitive, Microsoft and Nintendo will also be releasing new hardware around the same time to ensure Sony doesn't get a 1 year head start again in the upcoming generation.

Which is interesting, because then they have to rush a new product through to counter, which again aids Sony. Sony's biggest asset, IMO, is their sense of timing.

Between the PSP, the 'PSX' combination DVR/PS2, the 'Cell' CPU delays, and the complete lack of anything resembling PS3 specs on fan sites, I think 2006 is more likely.

Tech specs on fansites are not a good gauge of when a new system will be coming out...

Very true. In fact, Sony is probably doing everything short of killing people to prevent any sort of specs from leaking out to the competition.

The only tech fact I know for sure is that one component of unspecified use is being tested and produced by the IBM plant in Endicott, NY. This was a year ago.

The only thing they'll be rushing is their old systems out the door. They have just as much time to get their next systems ready as Sony does.

Agreed. The Big N in particular has been very vocal about working on their next-gen hardware. They already had ATI signed to work on the graphics chip long before MS or Sony publicly settled on deals.

If anything, considering the tight competiton, the next round in the console wars will be more brutal and hard fought than in any previous generation.

"Publicly" being the operative word. I know for a fact Sony had some kind of plans for the PS3 in place at least a year ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they had plans and deals for the PS3 before the PS2 even came out. Not to say the others haven't, but when the public learns of this stuff and when it actually occurs are often separated by quite a time.

As for Nintendo being vocal about working on it, of course they need to be. They can't have Sony upstaging them again. They're just trying to get the word out that they too are working on it.

And hey, Sony and Nintendo had a public deal in place for the system after the SNES, but that fell through.

Right now there's just nothing to go on but speculation and the propaganda that the three companies are feeding us.

Which is the problem, and why the PS1 had a huge headstart on the competition. It's really a multi-edged sword. All three are relatively forced to come out with their systems at the same time, or else get left behind in the wake of popularity.

I will concede, I don't think it's that big a deal, having a few months prep time over another company. I think what will (and always has) determined who will "win" the console wars is third-party software and to a lesser extent backwards compatibility. The latter of which allows for a larger starting base of software.

What I would love to see Nintendo do is work in backwards compatibility for the GC. I can't imagine why they wouldn't try, seeing as how well it benefitted Sony. I find it curious we haven't heard the big N hyping that up.

And an aside, please don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those rabid Sony fanboys who wants to see Nintendo burn in hell. :) I want to see everyone do good, even X-Box for what it's worth, because more competition only benefits the consumer. It's just that Sony has made such a strong showing the last few years that you can't discount that when considering the next-gen consoles.
