Spellcasters are the most powerful base classes in 3.5 - no contest. And the arcane casters make some of the -best- blasters. Yes, an empowered fireball may only hit you for 50. but it also hit the cleric, the druid, the figher...
I'd probably try to kill a cleric first though, but a wizard (or sorceror) can dish out more -total- damage than most other classes, and they can even spread it around evenly so none of that pretty damage is wasted!
