I read the preview brochure, but I still don't get what makes the setting special. I have not read the books, so if anyone here has, sell me on it!

Well...

DM -

If you haven't read the books...it will be a bit of a hard sell. It is one of the original gritty, low(er) magic worlds where shades of gray are much more prevelant than black and white. While powerful magics are possible in the world, they are the province of very powerful NPC wizards - The Taken and the Circle of Eighteen.

The protagonists - members of the Last of the Free Companies of Khatovar (a legendary mercenary company) - make their way in the world via wit, moral ambiguity (when necessary), subterfuge and violent battle. Their magics are mostly limited to hedge wizardry, illusion and ritual (incantation) magic.

Not for everyone, but I have been a huge fan of Glen Cook's Black Company for 20 years. Do yourself a favor and pick up the original "Black Company"...it is a quick read and will make the setting make sense ;)!

~ Old One

PS - The Black Company books are books that I pick up and read again and again (although some of the later books are a bit "uneven" in quality).

If you have ever played the PC game MYTH. You will have a pretty good idea of the "feel" of the setting. Except that the Black Company aren't really the good guys...they are mercenaries who get stuck working for the bad guys for a portion of the books.

How many books are in the series?

And if I do decide to read them, is there a particular order they go in or does it matter?

No, I haven't played MYTH, either.

(Am I out of touch or what? :heh: )

Looks like this fefllow has done the legwork, listing all the books in order:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...5255035/sr=5-2/ref=sr_5_2/002-1703644-1242412

The first five books were written more or less consecutively, while he took a seven-year break before writing hte final four. IMO, it gets grander, deeper and darker with each book, and by the end, you really feel like you've journeyed somewhere with these people. One of the few fantasy series I feel that strongly about.

I'm so psyched for this. Just two more months!

Thanks, Eridanis!

For those who have read the books, what was it about the Black Company that was most appealing to you?

I struggled initially; Glen Cook's writing style is very Spartan, with little in the way of descriptive frills or rich prose.

But I was won over eventually by the extremely compelling characters and plot. Dang! Great stuff in there.

Although I've still only read the "original" novels; I haven't read the second series of the south and all that.

I'm very looking forward to this. While you're reading the book, watch the Berserk Anime. There are some similiarities there. Human characters interacting with magic things way behond their ken. (Well, at least in the end for Berserk...)

Looks like a massive undertaking here in it's size and scope. Hope that it's somewhat compatible with Thieves World... (I'm telling you, the Company is going to Santuary!)
