Ptolus - Support

Hey Mav, that's very cool of you to say so! I should say that I'm lucky enough to be able to game with you a couple times a year.

I mentioned you because at the at the Gen Con - Arcana Evolved Tournament last year you were one of the DM's (along with Monte & Mike Mearls). So I have a local expert in case I'm not getting enough AE. :D

Back to the origional ptopic there are going to be a couple of "spire inspired" games at Gen Con (one is a Ptolus/AE crossover).

How useful will Ptolus be for not-D&D3E, and for that matter non-D20 System play? (Maybe Monte will answer this question, since he's missed it when i've asked on the Malhavoc forums.)
My off-hand guess? Not very. Ptolus has been described as "D&D turned up to 11."

Though if you can manage to squeeze FR or Eberron into whatever your favored system is, you could probably manage Ptolus too.

Dunno; never like either enough to bother trying. As an example, i consider the Seven... line from Atlas to be perfectly useable with other game systems. The classic Citybook line is my gold standard--and those were, despite some serial-number-filing, written specifically for D&D.

On Malhavoc's board, i got a mixture of responses, from "not at all" to "pretty useful"--which is why i'm hoping to get Monte's opinion, as he's gonna know best.

I'd say maybe ever so slightly less than that line, but about the same, really. It's mostly fantasy material, rather than game mechanics.

That's kinda what i'm hoping, and seeing the players' guide has almost pushed me over the edge; i'm --><--this close to pre-ordering. My only real remaining concerns are tying too much into the D&D classes/races (i.e., all major NPCs are elf/dwarf/human/gnome/halfling, rather than orcs and lizardfolk and whatevers; too many NPCs with D&D-specific class constructions like paladins, rather than more-generic fantasy stuff like fighters and wizards), and hewing too closely to the D&D3E magic assumptions (i.e., shoehorning everything into just the limited set of effects in the PH spells, frex).

Not saying that either of these is true, just that those are my remaining concerns. And, really, both of those are such subjective lines, that i may just have to wait until it's out and look at it myself. I'd just sort of like to preorder, if i'm gonna get it at all.

Thats good to hear. I was hoping to use it with Rolemaster (or HARP).
