I don't think that this is a step to improve things for a customer. When i wanted to patch something last week and was asked to let MS verify my license (which i did), MS told me that my license was not valid and threw me out.
Next thing i did was to enquire what the hell is going on, since i have bought my MS-XP not so long ago (so yes, it is mine and yes it is legal) - and the support told me someone else had already used the registration number that i have and thus their system doesn't accept mine.
How funny - some guy with a regcode-generator accidentally uses your number and then you are treated as illegal user? WTF is all i can say to that. Luckily there is Linux...

It also will over anyone who doesn't buy software off the shelf. I purchased my copy of XP from a legitimate download service because I only paid $65. This new tool tells me it's not "genuine."

HAHA! If you need to use windows, use windows 2000 like I do. Obsolete, you say? Works fine for me, and isnt messed around with, I say!

I use 2k, too, and it works pretty ok. It's much more stable than 98, at least. XP blows. It blows poorly.
