what class do you want to play?
5e classes mostly do a fair job of evoking their TSR-era incarnation, and, I either got bored with or never liked just about all the classes in that period. The exception being the Druid. Coincidentally, the 5e Druid is particularly good, IMHO, at evoking the classic version - OK, it's not casting Call Lightning at 3rd level, but still, on balance, pretty good. I've played a cleric and a wizard in 5e, too, in one-offs, but the Druid is the only one that tempts me to move to the other side of the screen on a more regular basis.

But I was thinking what class would I most want to play, if I started with a blank slate?
Traditionally everyone starts with a Fighter. If they're not dragooned into playing the band-aid cleric, that is. ;)

See, many of the times we are constrained in life. ...
But what if you aren't constrained? What if you got to play any character class you wanted? You don't have to worry about what the setting will be like. You don't have to worry about builds, or DPR, or anything else. ...
That's the question.
Throw away your preconceptions and your worries, and just answer- what class do you want to play the most?
Oh, in that case, Warlord, obviously. ;)

I'd like to play a pure support character, someone who do mostly nothing in combat beyond defending himself if attacked, someone who dont even engage in the fight if can avoid it. Something like a pure diviner wizard or a thief with crappy combat stat. Sadly, at my table, if you dont contribute to combat, your worthless even if your out-of-combat skills are goods, then you're just accused of stealing the spotlight. Good thing I Dm most of the time.

Did you like playing Netrunners in cyberunk games? ;)

You know, I only ever played a Druid once in 1e. Illusionist was my go-to class! Yeah, I know.
Yeah, it wasn't exactly the first class I played, either. I played magic-users a lot, and a few Illusionists before I got bored with them (for different reasons the 1e Illusionist was kinda like a 5e chaos sorcerer - in that it was as fun to play as the DM made it). The Druid was more interesting, and, in 1e, if we're being honest, really kinda broken - d8 HD through 14 levels, 3rd level spells at 3rd level, shapechanging at 7th, some quite abuseable spells on it's list. ;)

I guess the main thing is that I didn't play it to death. By the time 2e rolled, I'd gotten one Druid to 10th level and started another. As opposed to multiple magic-users to name level. The 2e Druid didn't cut it for me, and by then I was almost always running rather than playing, anyway. That druid did get to 12th eventually, though. ;)

Likewise, 3e & 4e Druids didn't thrill me.

Crossbow Expert Sharpshooter Fighter. Just cut loose, and say "Yea, I'm overpowered, I'm powergaming, and I love it!"

Warlord. But since that's not an option... all of them (yes, even the Ranger (Hunter only though)).

Oh. Well then I guess Warlock since I seem to end up playing at least partial Warlocks the most.

For me, it's always been paladins. Ever since AD&D, I've played a paladin. Anytime we start a new campaign my group always says "so manduck is playing a paladin, how about everyone else?" before I say a word. Yes, they're right. Hey, at least I'm consistent.
