D&D 5E (2024) Purple Dragon Knight as a background?

I would like to point out: no one has read the new and updated Cormyr lore in the new book.

So the new PDK is probably lore correct, it's the old lore that is out of date

More likely the new creators don't know the old lore and are using handwavium for kewl's sake. Plus the player tokens would look cooler on actual plays!

We should probably just make all Cormyr the Kingdom of Purple Dragonborn. Old lore is outdated. No need to pay attention to it.

That is exactly why people abandoned 4e for Pathfinder. New does not mean better. Just look at the Wheel of Time show for reference.

Make it a background. New designers are taking a good bit of FR lore and messing it up with a dragon riding subclasses. Just make a character and roleplay the PDK.

Are we going to make other factions backgrounds? Harper background .... Zhent background .... Shadow Thief background?

There is already a background for the PDK - Soldier and if you don't like the specifics on it you can go with a custom background, or the 2014 Knight background..

Same for a Purple Dragon Knight subclass. It doesn't belong as a subclass either. A Dragon Rider subclass is fine, a Banneret subclass is fine a Purple Dragon Knight is not.

They are no longer at WOTC and are not writing the Forgotten Realms books.

These books started under their leadership. The UA was published while they still worked there.

Well at least one of them said they were leaving because they just finished and launched the 2024 core rulebooks.

I doubt either of them are credited on either of the new Forgotten Reams rulebooks and I don't think either of them are heavily involved in it. Also, I believe Crawford was responsible for rules, not creative content.

Actually yes, the 8 factions in the books are all getting backgrounds. Harper’s, Emerald Enclave, Zents, even the Cult of the Dragon and the Red Wizards.

Maybe even purple dragon knight as a title; as an example, background could be urchin, class could be ranger, position and title could be purple dragon knight. Then the pdk subclass just becomes the generic name of banneret. Maybe it calls out that many pdk fighters choose it.
