Purple Dragon Knight is such a silly subclass name. It's like a Monty Python title. Which is awesome for the right campaign, to be fair.

I picture a dude in armour that is sort of a mix of Excalibur and Prince, walking into the tavern and boldly announcing, "I AM THE PURPLE DRAGON KNIGHT!"

I get this, but the big problem IMO is "Purple Dragons" in the forgotten realms are the Knights defending Cormyr. They are humans, they don't have pet dragons and have nothing to do with Dragons other than their coat of arms and name. Associating them with pet Dragons would be like giving the U.S. Army 101st "Screaming Eagles" pet Raptors or U.S. Marine "Devil Dogs" pet hellhounds.
The Welsh national rugby team are known as The Dragons, because there is a red dragon on the Welsh flag. Do you know why there is a red dragon on the Welsh flag? Most Welsh people don't.

Over time, original meanings become lost and change. What would be really weird is if things stayed the same forever.

It's ironic that some people have been demanding a new Forgotten Realms campaign setting book for over 10 years now for 5E, because they wanted an update to all the nations across Faerun... but here we are with a potential update to Cormyr's lore and people are not wanting anything to change from the way things were centuries ago.

What's the point in wanting a campaign setting update without getting things updated? Just use your 3E FRCS then.

That may very well be true. But is it the full FR campaign book people have wanted? It looks like it focuses on more areas sure, but it looks to still not be as comprehensive as the third edition one, which is the yard stick most are using? I could be wrong here, as I'm not a FR guy so I'm not following it super closely.

Probably not when it's being compared to what came out for the FR in 3e. There was the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book which provided a bit of an overview of the various lands on the continent of Faerun (5e spent more time covering the Sword Coast). Then there were the FR supplements which covered each of those lands in better detail.

So, yes, the 3e FRCS is probably the yard stick most FR fans are using atm when it comes to the new 5e FR books. Despite being heavy in crunch, the 3e FR covered a lot of useful lore for both DMs and players alike.
