Just going to drop some original lore here.

Purple Dragon knights develop uncanny skills related to coordinating and leading soldiers. Most are fighters, rangers, or paladins, but a few bards, clerics, and rogues have been known to become Purple Dragon knights.

Which i agree sounds more like a background than a subclass.

Like a background that gets at-will Commander's Strike or other party buff as an origin feat.

It should just be a generic dragon-having class where the breath weapon varies depending on which type of dragon your character's partnered with and you get abilities relating to dragons. That would allow way more flexibility in terms of flavor and also not completely change the lore of a long-established faction.

I also find it mildly amusing that PCs are taking a child (even if the child's a dragon) into battle with them.

I think I like something like..

Background:
Purple Knight of Cormyr.
Abilities: Str, Dex, Cha
Skills: Persuasion, Intimidation
Tool: Calligrapher’s Supplies
Origin feat: Martial Adept

Subclass:
Dragon Rider (UA)
Cha based, any type of dragon
Level 10: dragon gets utility spells.

A dragon knight subclass should give resistance to the damage type of their dragon's breath weapon and immunity to their specific dragon's breath weapon.

Maybe immunity to the damage type as part of the capstone ability.

Maybe they should attempt to generic all the subclasses?

College of the Moon: - college of fables
Knowledge domain - can't get much more generic
Purple Dragon knight - dragon rider
Oath of Noble Genies - Oath of Elements
Winter Walker - Arctic Explorer
Scion of the Three - serial killer
Spellfire Sorcery - Cosmic sorcery
Bladesong - uber gish.

They could have probably gone back and done that to Path of the World Tree and Aberrant Sorcery, but too late now I guess.

It's ironic that some people have been demanding a new Forgotten Realms campaign setting book for over 10 years now for 5E, because they wanted an update to all the nations across Faerun... but here we are with a potential update to Cormyr's lore and people are not wanting anything to change from the way things were centuries ago.
It's interesting that one of the most die-hard FR fans (@Henadic Theologian ) is in wait-and-see mode until there is more lore dropped.

Most of the Lore is in Novels, not campaign books and the problem is here they have not updated the Lore and if they associate Dragons with the Purple Dragons it is more like changing the Lore than updating it, kind of like what happened to Shaddar-Kai.

I'm a Realms fan and while I was originally taken aback by the change, it's starting to grow on me. I can see a lot of storytelling potential to explain the change. The Purple Dragons are still the army of Cormyr, but for some reason a group of Amethyst Dragons approached the Crown or the War Wizards and cut a deal for a new order of knights. What threat are the reacting to? Is ther some prophecy driving them. What is the purpose of this new elite order. This can expand the lore as opposed to break the lore. I like it.

I think this is cheesy and it is making Lore so they can have a subclass that rides Dragons, when it would have been easier just to make a subclass that rides Dragons.

Also Amethyst Dragons are kind of off brand too. I know technically they are a thing, but the Gem Dragons as a whole have almost no Forgotten Realms stories behind them, unlike metallics and chromatics.
