PWI: Posting while intoxicated

After many YEARS of pressure, I'm taking the first steps towards joining my church's choir group. Quoting myself from elsewhere:

I have to explain: that guitarist & bass player are both very experienced musicians. The pianist is a talented jazz musician who is "big in Japan" as they say. And leading this bunch & the choir is our music minister- an established Christian rock musician whose resumé includes recording with Andy Timmons as his lead guitarist, playing for 2 Popes, and having some of his music included as part of the new mass that was introduced in the Catholic church this year.

Intimidating, no question.

Honestly...I'm a terrible introvert who hates performing in front of people. And my voice is my best instrument, anyway. AND I have the worst practicing habits around.

I think I have the skills to contribute; the main question is whether I have the DISCIPLINE. Only time will tell.

But to get there, I need help finding 2 things:

1) I need a capo, a GOOD one. Many of the pieces the group performs are either written or have been transcribed to use one...and I don't own one.

2) I would like a good set of relatively compact but high quality headphones. Due to my schedule, I don't get a lot of practice time at home, so I frequently practice where and when I using one of my Korgs or Tascam practice doodads and some Sony MDR-XD100 over ear headphones, which are bulky as hell. I have earbuds from various makers, but they simply can't handle the dynamic range, and are generally less than comfy, So, what is out there that delivers good sound but can be fit in a relatively small space.

So...whatcha got?

A capo? My guitarist friends seem to have so many of them, I thought they were breeding in the guitar cases. The things range from $0.01 to about $15 on Amazon. Getting a capo is the least of your worries.

I mean, if nothing else, you can steal few kid's toys and *make* one:

Unless you mean "capo" as in "Caporegime". I don't know why you need a mobster on the end of your guitar - is it performance art, or something?

capo = trivial. Guitar Centaur has that stuff

plus it really depends on what you're playing that needs a capo. Learn more chords or kill the Jazz guy. That'll eliminate the need for a capo.
<joke>what's the difference between a Jazz guitarist and a rock guitarist?
The jazz guitarists knows a thousand chords and plays to an audience of three.
The rock guitarist knows three chords and plays to an audience of a thousand.
</joke>

good luck, don't be chicken. It's a little daunting playing for an audience, but its fun.

I can't kill "the Jazz Guy"- they're ALL jazz guys! :D

I exaggerate, but not by much: the bass player & guitarist are blues/rock guys with some jazz leanings; the music director- whose original compositions are mainly rock/pop style- has a Masters in it. As I recall, the pianist was one of his instructors! And an amusing side note, our Monsignor introduced our music doctor to the guitar (it's like his fourth distinct instrument) and plays harmonica- useful instruments for passing time during his his days as a roadie.

There's even another music instructor who is a choir member! And the percussionist who volunteers for the big services has a couple of CDs to his credit as well.

THAT kind of depth of talent & skill is why I need to make sure I get my act together before showing up with one of my guitars.

well, you better start learning those jazz chords (there are not special chords for jazz, its simply that Jazz guys use the whole chord bible).

What style of music are y'all actualy playing? christian rock? Or hymns with a rocking feel?

That stuff'll probably stick with the more common chords.

Either way, just stare at your fretboard and you'll never notice there's an audience.

Go hit the woodshed and you'll be fine. Let us know when your second gig is, and maybe I'll try to make the trip up to see it.

Stylistically, its kind of pop/folk with jazz flourishes during the "solos" (which are mainly to extend the songs or give choirmembers a chance to get communion).

It's mostly a mix of stuff from Glory & Praise, some uncollected stuff by some of the genre's luminaries, and the original compositions of the music minister. OTOH, last year, we did a Nigerian Christmas Carol- in the native tongue- for our new assistant pastor.

While most of that stuff SHOULD be simple, some of it has been transcribed to different keys to accommodate the makeup of our choir, hence the friggin' capo.

Either way, just stare at your fretboard and you'll never notice there's an audience.

Like the fierce African Rhino, I am cursed with myopia and blessed with excellent- though blurry- peripheral vision. I can't help but notice them...hopefully, I won't charge if someone makes some sudden moves.
