Quaal's Feather Token activation method

The description of Quaal's Feather Tokens in the DMG does not say what the activation method is. Presumably they are command word activated items, and take a standard action, but what else? Some of them obviously cannot be activated while the item is in hand (unless you want an oak tree on top of you), so what does one have to do? Throw them down, place them somewhere, etc.? And in that case, can they be activated from a distance? Information and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, in advance.

And yes, Hyp, I love the trees too :)

I would at least go with the default standard action to activate. Whether or not that involves speaking a command-word or throwing the token down, I recommend you just do what makes most sense to you, but still keep it at least a standard action.

We're currently planning to use the rule that it requires throwing the token down on any surface. Which will take a standard action.

Well, you may want to rethink this just a *little* bit if you are going to make that rule and *stick* to it. Such as, for instance, the Oak Tree.. Say you are falling to your death and you think, "Wow, I should use my Quaal's Feather Token to produce a tree underneath me" in this case, there would be nothing to throw it onto a surface. Perhaps I think just "tossing" the feather token where you want it to produce it's effect would be sufficient (which would be a standard action as per activing a magic item) would work.

This all depends on, like I said, how much your DM is a stickler for activing the item ;)

Funny. My DM and I discussed exactly this situation when coming up with the rule. But I can't see how useful a tree would be to break one's fall if something isn't supporting the tree itself. Unless the magic of the item could create a tree capable of floating in mid-air, which might be a bit much (cool visual, however).

Darklone - Luckily my DM's not a Rat Bastard. Since I am, however, I have a lot of ideas for fun with tree tokens when I'm back to DM-ing. Ooh yeah! :D
