Quadraped huge and larger creatures and their counter size

Iron Captain

First Post
I have seen some counters for dragons of the huge and larger size categories and the counters were rectangular rather than square. Now this does seem to make sense for Qudrapeds (which are longer than they are tall) but I coudn't find any rules for this in the PHB or the MM.
Can someone point me in the right direction? Or are these out of date 3e rules?

The closest thing I found was Table 8-4 on page 149 in the PHB which makes references for creatures of the size category Large(long) for example, but the space entry still seems to say that these creatures still take up a 2x2 square (10ft) of space.

The rectangular faces were for 3.0 rules. But 3.5 rules assume (much more accuratley, IMNSHO) that creatures keep changing direction during a round, turning around all the time to face foes. This, in real life, would create a circular area that the creature needs to fight adequatedly. Since DnD uses squares, theis area is translated as a square "fighting space". The creature doesn't occupy the entire square (unless it's a gelatinous cube), but needs that much space to fight effectively. If the available area is smaller than that fighting space (like, say, a horse in a 5'-wide corridor), it suffers penalties to attack and AC (reflecting the fact that the creature has trouble turning around to face foes or weaving out of harm's way).
