D&D 5E Quest XP rewards?

So, for example, my players have to negotiate with a powerful wizard in return for a copy of his spellbook to get access to Candlekeep to find the location of a lost tomb that holds the information they need to complete Quest Magic Item A. That would be, probably, 3 minor milestones (getting the spellbook, not offending the monks at Candlekeep, and then finding the McGuffin to complete the magic item), and a major milestone for actually using said McGuffin to complete said Quest Magic Item A. Further, the three minor milestones would be equivalent to easy encounters, while the major milestone at the end would be equivalent to a hard encounter.

Do I have that right?

EDIT: Rather, they would be equivalent to the experience gained via killing monsters equal to those levels of difficulty. Encounter building in 5e is super weird.
