If an evil cleric has the maximum amount of undead commanded (HD equal to his cleric level); and he rebukes another two ghouls resulting in commanding because of his level; and he chooses not to relinquish any he already has commanded; then why are the newly commanded undead rebuked instead?
When relinquishing command, are the relinquished undead automatically rebuked for some amount of time? Why would the new ones be affected by the turn check twice? He commanded them and relinquished control of them in the same action, why would they then be rebuked?
If the evil cleric wants to get by the ghoul guards and he is too high a level to rebuke them, he must destroy them in combat or let some of his pets go to get by them. The voluntary part allows the evil cleric to choose which one(s) of his undead he wants to let go. If it is the newly encountered ones; he just wasted a turn attempt to let them go; he doesn't get double duty out of his turn attempt.
If it was a good cleric who would destroy the undead of an ally with a turn check (say a shadowdancer's shadow companion for instance); could he choose to turn it instead (something it is immune to)? Or would he have to arrange it so that his friend's undead companion is not in the area to be affected?
What's good for the goose...
