Question about GURPS

I want to know, if you have GURPS Lite (the free download) is that enough to use any other GURPS supplement. I want to buy the GURPS Russia supplement. Would I be able to play it as a FRPG with those two products alone?

I probably only want to use GURPS Russia for inspiration (for D&D), but I thought I'd ask anyway. I've never played GURPS, though I've briefly looked thru GURPS lite.

Many, but not all. Some of the more "crunchy" settings require some stuff from other sourcebooks. For fantasy campaigns, GURPS Magic is needed frequently.

As long as you leave spells in the hands of NPCs (which fits the folk tales rather well), it should work just fine. Otherwise get GURPS Magic...

Well, if you only want it for inspiration , GURPS Lite will probably give you enough understanding of the GURPS rules to convert everything.

That just about covers it. Thanks. :)

I'll probably go a head and just get GURPS Russia, but I'll think about giving GURPS magic a look, anyway. I really should look at something besides D&D at some point in my life.

I have never played GURPS but I own quite a few supplement for that very purpose. It generally works well. I remember using Voodoo and Scarlet Pimpernel to great effect rules notwithstanding.

GURPS is really awesome even if you never use the rules, for its supplements are usually extremely well researched.

If I were going to attempt to play Gurps, and didn't want to buy the core rulebook, Gurps Lite would definately be an excellent place to start. In fact, I have the distinction of being the first downloader ever of the current Gurps Lite pdf. Whee.

Gurps Magic is useful in the extreme if you plan on having a spellcaster, since the spells in Gurps Lite are very very limited.

Yes. I only notice bad german translations (obviously), but they can be rather ugly. One of the Alternate Earths books has a rapier-like weapon called a Schlager (correct spelling would likely be Schläger).

Schläger in german means, depending on context, either
1) brawler, hooligan or something similar, or
2) bat as in baseball bat.

Nothing really evoking the elegant picture usually linked to rapiers, right? ;)

Then there was this sidebar in Gurps Egypt about a possible link between the name Hitler and the Hittites - who are called Hethiter in german. Now that is likely bad research. ;)

Uhm.... The German Burschenschaften, which still do some duelling these days, actually do have a bladed weapon called the "Schläger". See this link for more.

And dropping the Umlaut dots are forgiveable for an English-language publication in my opinion...

Well, maybe thats what they meant- that this weapon was a characteristic blade, used by hooligans.

I am not going to disagree with you... the Hitler one seems entirely contrived and patent bull drek.

However, I've spoken with Steffan O'Sullivan, a relatively "famous" and prolific GURPS writer, and he is nothing less than....exacting....in his research for his books.

I find Americans in general tend to make things up and hope for the best when dealing with translations.
