question about half-elf paladin/warlock

here is my idea, make a half elf paladin, high score in con and char. from racial bonus i will get one at will power outside my class - Dire Radiance. then i do multi class warlock. also i will get the dire radiance from the feat.
now, when in combat, i mark one creature, then attack him with Dire Radiance, if he attack someone other than me, he will take auto dmg and attack -2. if he moves and attacks me, he will get dmged from Dire Radiance and take a attack opportunity.
my questions r:
1: can u take same power twice even tho they r from different sources?
2. after paladin marks someone, does he have to engage the creature with a melee attack?

thx

I don't know about 1, 'cos I can't recall any references.
2, however, is easy.
A paladin has to attack or be adjacent. Doesn't say if the attack is melee, so anything will do.

1. You can not pick the same power twice. Period.

2. You have to either move adjacent or attack to maintain your mark. So yes marking followed by ranged attacks is very obnoxious.

he will get dmged from Dire Radiance and take a attack opportunity.

he will take Dire Radiance damage, but he wouldn't provoke an OA

The 1st one is quite a tricky question. You'll have to take that to Customer Service. There's nothing I can recall that forbids it. You may want to check to see if Retraining allows you to take the same encounter power, by sacrificing a later levels encounter power-slot. It would be a very similiar mechanic.

As mentioned, 2 is easy. Its attack or move closer, so you can happily plink at it with a ranged weapon.

Note that any remotely intelligent creature with the facility to do so, is likely to start lobbing the nearest pieces of rubble it can, as an improvised ranged weapon, as it would be aware of both effects.

Hmm ... does that then mean someone who multi-classes into warlock and then takes the paragon warlock multiclass option can't do the at-will swap to get the same power as their pact choice?

1. Why would you pick the same power?

2. You don't have to engage with a melee attack as far as I read it. Just keep using Dire Radiance.

However, be well aware that this tactic diminishes your ability to be an effective Defender. Since you are dealing damage to the target if he attacks you or doesn't, he'll probably not attack you and instead attack someone else (your divine challenge has lost much of its deterrence factor). That assumes he can't attack you from range or otherwise include you in his attack. Especially if you are wearing plate and hence have a very high AC.

my build is more of a dmg dealer than a tank. beside by attacking another guy, he will get -2 attack. my weapon of choice is spear, since i can poke someone with reach, so whoever get marked will facing the choice of taking an AO, or taking auto dmg
