Question about Luck Domain granted power

First Post
Can a cleric with the Luck Domain use his granted power to re-roll the damage done by a spell (or the amount healed by a cure spell)? The description in the PHB is not clear, only stating that you may re-roll one roll that you have just made, and that you must keep that result (even if it is worse than before). If the answer to this question is yes, then if you deal multiple dice in damage (or healing), do you re-roll ALL the dice, or just one of the dice?

Thanks.

* This extraordinary ability allows you to reroll one roll you have just made. You must take the result of the second roll - even if it is worse than the original roll. *

Sorry greathouse - but I have to disagree with you on this one. The rule is preety clear - any one roll.
The ability does not read recast a given die.

Is "roll" a defined term in the game? It's not in the back of the PH, but it may be in the extended glossary on the Wizards website. If it's not, any ruling is subjective.

I'd say the ability allows you to reroll all the dice. If you hit someone with a greatsword your damage roll is still 2d6, and I think using the power to reroll only one of the dice seems a bit strange...

But I see your Point, Greathouse, since rerolling 20 dice of a high level damage spell seems a bit much.

Subjective, indeed.

Oh cmon...it's once per day and they have to take the second roll anyway. If there's 20 dice, then that just means that the overall effect of using the luck power would be less than if it were used on a single die...think about your statistics classes and how larger samples tend to average out a lot more (sure you can flip a coin and have it come up heads twice, but very rarely will it come up heads 20 times, etc.). The power is already not incredibly strong if you ask me, and I really doubt people would use it for something like this unless they happened to roll really low, and I myself would still save the power for a failed saving throw or something.

So yeah, I'd let them have it for all dice if they want to use it like that.

From WOTC's extended glossary:

"roll: Throw one or more dice to resolve an attack,
check, saving throw, or other game function."

Seems pretty clear to me, a roll can be one die, or many.

Thanks for the replies!

God, I love these boards! Thanks to everyone who took time to respond. A little background behind the question.

My cleric of Brandobaris needed to cast Lesser Restoration on two of her fellow party members. She was able to cure the temporary ability damage of one PC with one spell, but was looking at using at least 2 more on the other (-5 temporary Dex. loss!). As it turns out, I rolled crappola on both of those (2 + 1 does not equal five!), and needed to prepare a fourth casting. That, too, turned out to be a 1! Since the PC did not want to wait the day to regain her 1 point back, I was reminded by the DM that I could use a higher level spell-slot to prepare another spell. That is when I decided to use my luck power to re-roll, but the DM said no, because he wasn't sure the power allowed you to re-roll damage (only things like blown saving throws, skill checks, etc.).
