Question about Shield Spell

So, there was a question, or debate, as to one specific of this spell as written. Most were of the opinion that it was a global protection and that the description that stated it 'hovered in front' of a caster was just flavor, but at least one person was interpreting it as 'only protecting in front of you'. So I figured I'd just go ahead and ask here for certain about it.

Are shield bonuses (and the shield spell specifically) only applicable to frontal attacks, or is it just listed as a bonus 'type' to prevent stacking?

This question has the 3/3.5 icon, so I'll assume that's what you're talking about.

Officially speaking, for the purpose of rules adjudication, creatures do not have a front or back. That's why (for example) you get a flanking bonus for being on opposite sides of a target, but not for being behind them. You can think of it as anyone being able to turn around quickly, at any time, if that's easier for you to visualize.

Okay, that's what I have thought. And yes, I meant 3/3.5 hence the icon.

I think the person in question (DM actually, group argued him to the correct way of thinking) is just too familiar with other gaming systems where facing IS an issue, like GURPS. Was facing a thing in 2e? He may also have gotten it from there. Either way, its good to have a 2nd opinion on the matter from outside of our group, so thanks. :)

Facing was definitely a thing in AD&D, and a physical shield could only block attacks from the front (or maybe the side, but definitely not the back).

A quick Google search for AD&D shield spell text reveals, "Note that all benefits of the spell accrue only to attacks originating from the front facing the magic-user, where the Shield can move to interpose itself properly. "
