Question about Talon Amulet

I totally understand this point, but my point is, if it was every attack, why wouldn't it be worded as

"Every time you are hit with a melee attack, you deal 1d6 damage to the attacking creature"

Would you accept "Any time you hit by a melee attack..."?

If so, why not accept "any creature that hits you with a melee attack takes 1d6 damage." But yeah, make whatever ruling you want, but the wording is pretty clear to me.

My Avenger had one when we were playing through Scales of War. The daily power was neat, but since we tended to have 4-5 encounters a day, it definitely wasn't overpowered.

I have a quick question regarding the Talon Amulet. The power effect states:

Minor Action. Up until the end of the encounter, any creature that hits you with a melee attack takes 1d6 damage.

One of my players wants to buy it (market value is 360gp) but it seems completely overpowered for a 3rd level power.

The question/debate at the table is:

Does the damage happen with every melee attack against the player for the encounter, or is it one specific attack within the encounter?

The wording can be taken either way. My players (naturally) are arguing that the wording essentially says that it means every attack, whereas I assume it means that one attack inflicts it.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

As Per the Compendium

D&DI Compendium said:

Level: 3
Price: 680 gp

Property: Gain +1 item bonus to damage rolls when you have combat advantage.
Power (Daily): Minor Action. Up until the end of the encounter, any creature that hits you with a melee attack takes 1d6 damage.

Well, it looks like overwhelming support for my players argument.

Before I generate any DM rage, I've been playing D&D long enough to know/remember that the DM has the final say, but I generally like to have a little more democracy in my group.

I've decided to allow the player to purchase the item, and use it as it (apparently) is intended.

I hope that you did note that the cost is 680 gold and that the power is a DAILY and not an ENCOUNTER power.

I have one for my assassin (along with Deathcut armor) to try and make the enemies avoid hitting him as the class is quite squishy. It's not really much of a deterrant though as brutes and soldiers have the hp to not really worry about the minor damage, artillery is ranged, controllers tend to have area effects. Really only lurkers or skirmishers might be cautious. I like that it grants +1 damage when having CA though.

First, welcome to your whole group! It seems like you are all new here. :)

Second, I also support your player's viewpoint, but also want to reemphasize the compendium changes to the item (680gp, daily).

First double post evah! w00t!

Now I know how to reproduce the error so I can officially avoid it and laugh at the rest of you when you double post. Muhahaha.
