Question for Upper_Krust

Hey UK, sorry to bug you, but I have a burning question.

This is my design for the Saiyan race.

How would YOU handle acquiring powerful abilities that you must change for to use? The abilities are generally unlimited, but they are not continuous.

The Super Saiyan ability is one example, Power Rangers are another example. For instance, the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers were good fighters normally, but then once they activate their powers, they're even stronger. They don't ALWAYS use the powers, but when they do, those powers are very strong.

Should an ECL modifier apply all the time, or should you assign an ECL modifier for XP only when transformed into the more powerful state?

Another good example would be a Sailor Scout from the Sailor Moon series, or a Ronin Warrior from the Ronin Warriors series.

I hope you get the idea. How would you deal with this?

Off hand I am not totally sure - the matter would need a thorough investigation.

That said the Super-Saiyan 'boost' would seem to favour the template format.

The base powers are seemingly all either 'Ki' or 'Psi' based. I favour 'Ki' based but 'Cha' based abilities sound more feasible...?

I think you could explain powers (like Kamehameha) akin to Divine Blast and Divine Shield (in fact I think this would work well). But I don't see them necessarily gaining other Divine Abilities.

I'll have a think on it.

Hmmm . . . Is it possible to make a "conditional template" that makes a character one ECL normally and another ECL for determining XP under special circumstances?

I was thinking that the Template would employ Multipliers than bonuses - though in such cases the ECL/CR would have to be determined ad hoc.

Personally, I would calculate the ECL based on their full potential, then adjust it downards somewhat to compensate for the fact that they have to tranform into a new state to use them.

ummm here's a thought.
Make a template for saiyan.
Have saiyan take whatever classes it needs to take.

Make a Prestige Class for Super Saiyan.

Prerequisites should be attainable by different classes so that it shows the different backgrounds of the characters. Like Goku would be a focused monk. Picolo would be a monk. Vegeta would be a fighter/monk. Gohan would have a level or two in barbarian.
etc.

you get the drift. (no I didn't read the link, was just commenting right off the top of my head) :)

You obviously have very few ranks in Knowledge (Dragonball).

A Template doesn't work due to the simple fact that Saiyans are a full-fledged race. Piccolo could not become a Super Saiyan because he's a Namekian. The only people with Super Saiyan potential are the ones who actually have Saiyan blood in them.

Goku
Raditz
Nappa
Vegeta
Gohan
Goten
Trunks
Brolly

Presumably, Pan and Bra also have the potential, but for some reason, neither of them ever go Super Saiyan. Perhaps going Super Saiyan is limited to males? Also, Cell has Saiyan blood in him and should be able to go Super Saiyan as well, but he doesn't. (Actually, I think he does, he just doesn't have any visual identifications of his going Super Saiyan. I do recall, however, a certain scene where Cell was surrounded by a gold energy field, similar to that given off by Super Saiyans.)

Cell aside, the rest are the only ones with true Super Saiyan potential. I would rule both males and females for balance, but the requirements for different types of Saiyans going Super Saiyan would be much different.

The Prestige Class idea MIGHT be able to work, but that's actually what I would make a Template. A Super Saiyan Template that can only be applied to Saiyans, perhaps, much like the Celestial and Fiendish Templates.
