Question on a Dragon Shaman aura

Legend
For the aura that deals energy damage to the opponent, does the damage apply every time the creature

1) attacks you?
2) successfully hits you?
3) 1 or 2, but only once per round?

The language used is pretty much the same as with the fire shield spell. We play that one as per successful attack.

Aye. Each time it actually hits you (or your ally nearby) with a melee attack (besides a reach weapon), it takes the Energy Shield's damage. Generally, you aren't 'stricken' if the creature swings a miss.

This was handy when my halfling copper-dragon shaman and his allies had to go up against a red dragon.....think it was a juvenile red, but it mauled the barbarian and the swordsage and the NPC dragon-slaying ranger (5th level, we hired him cuz the dragon ninja'd the barbarian to death twice previously with death from above) pretty badly with full-attacks. My Acid Energy Shield zapped it with some acid damage though each time one of his natural attacks scored a hit, and that was my only meaningful contribution to its defeat (I went after the kobold cleric that was trying to heal the dragon, with my morningstar; but my aura still helped hasten the dragon's defeat!).

I continue to think the Dragon Shaman is a pretty nifty core class. I don't understand why it isn't very popular. Maybe the flavor of the class turns people off? If it were called "Aura Master" and it's powers were described as emanating powerful energy fields rather than being dependant on Dragons, perhaps people would have taken to the class more.

I turned it into a "geomantic channeler" with just a slight rejigging of crunch and fluff.

(insert class description/flavour text very much like a druid's here)

remove alignment prereq

class skills: choose one set

spirit aura at 1st level: choose one energy type for resistance, energy shield; you become immune at 9th

spirit adaptation at 3rd, 13th: choose one special ability

breath weapon at 4th level becomes a line of geomantic energy (untyped) cast from your fingertips, like earthbolt spell (SC)

remove draconic resolve

draconic wings at 19th level becomes one of fly 60' (no wings), burrow 30' or swim 30' speed.

*nod* I did something similar for an aasimar character, making it into a 20-level Celestial Herritage class. Tweaked a few of the abilities (energy types on aura didn't have to match up exactly the same way, for example), added a Protection From Evil option for Draconic Resolve, and made the breath weapon into a point-blank spread aoe pillar of light. Added in a feat later that let the 'breath' weapon do half fire/half holy damage. Wings became feathery, and could be called or dismissed as needed.

Later went and modified some of the Fey/Fiendish Herritage feats from CompMage into Celestial Herritage feats.
