If I'm running a convention, can I offer Encounters?

Can I run Encounters in my home with my normal game group?

Only certain things can be run from home and be AL legal. The published adventure paths, Lost Mines, and a couple publically released (through Dragon+) Expeditions modiles. Anything else needs to be run publically in a store or store-sponsored other public venue, or a publically available online game.

If your convention is running on a Wednesday, possibly; otherwise no -- see "Can D&D Encounters be scheduled/run on days other than Wednesdays?" in the FAQ Wiki on the D&D Organizers Page.

If your convention is running on a Wednesday, and you do decide to offer Encounters, you should probably tell the folks there where next Wednesday's session will be held. If there is no other place to run the next session, then you probably shouldn't run Encounters at the convention.

Technically, no. However, you can run the hardcover adventure for your home game group as an AL-legal game, so in effect, you're running the same adventure at home that you'd be running out of the Encounters material. The difference being you can't just take the free PDF that the store receives and take it home and run it; you (or someone in the group) has to acquire the hardcover adventure.

The Organizers Page FAQ Wiki also has a link to a form where you can report your convention and possibly receive additional convention support materials -- see "How can my in-person convention or game day get D&D Adventurers League adventures?"

My guess is there is a Semantics issue...

When you say "Run Encounters", what, precisely do you mean? What content are you talking about? Why do you think that will be beneficial for your convention.

Without going back and verifying.... I believe you can run the hardcover content.... but I am not sure why you would want to.

(Well, I could see a special 'track' that went for much of the convention, where you could get through all of LMoP, or all of the first X chapters of one of the adventures....)

You can run any of the following adventures at your covention without special permission:
  • Lost Mines of Phandelver (starter set adventure)
  • Hoard of the Dragon Queen*
  • Rise of Tiamat*
  • Princes of the Apocalypse*
  • Out of the Abyss*
  • Expeditions: Any currently released Expedition.

* Each table requires a hardcover copy of the adventure, unless your convention is run on Wednesday (and only on Wednesday). The free pdf versions of these adventures (DDEN1-3) are only allowed to be played on Wednesdays as part of the Encounters program, and must be run in public.

Special Permission Required:
You can apply to gain any of the following additional adventures at your convention.

  • DDAO Adventures: These will be premiering at Winter Fantasy 2016. These adventures must be run by their author and require you to fly out said individual to the convention. These adventures are written by the admins, and WotC staff - and as such, you would need to host that particular admin/staff member at your con in order to qualify for these adventures.
  • Premier Expeditions: You may be eligable to host a world or regional premier of an as yet unreleased Expedition. These are the easiest to apply for.
  • Epics: Depending on the size of your convention, you may be eligible to apply for an Epic.
  • Fai Chen: While not an adventure, you may be eligible to apply for Fai Chen's Fantastic Faire. If eligible, you will need to get an admin, or your regional coordinator to run this event.
