for some reason, I was thinking metamagic rods were introduced in the miniatures handbook. ...sudden metamagics, my bad.


actually, you get something out of empowering a spell anyway, adding a higher DC would often break it. it's like Power Attack for spells.

I think by RAW, you can use a lesser rod on the empowered scorching ray, since it is for all intents and purposes other than actual slot used, a 2nd level spell. This really isn't even so bad, considering that the empowered dice would NOT be maximized, due to how the rules work for combining metamagic feats.

Luckily noone forces a DM to play using RAW I wouldn't allow it in my games. Metamagic Rods are cheesy enough already, imho, ymmv, etc.
