R.I.P. Will Eisner

Klaus

First Post
Will Eisner, 87, the most legendary of comic book masters, passed away on Monday evening, after complications due to a heart surgery he underwent.

The man was so great, his name was given to the "Oscars" of the comic book medium, the Eisner Awards. And he gave Jack Kirby his first job (!!!).

Read about the man at http://www.newsarama.com/pages/Eisner.htm

Rest In Peace, sir! Danny Colt will look over you!

Here's to Will, who made comics something much more than merely simplistic stories with sketchy drawings.

Here's to Will, a man who brought true art to comic books. Between him and Hal Foster, there was a real sense that comic books could be much, much more than kiddy stories.

Here's to Will, the person who has inspired so many artists since, whether in comics or otherwise.

He shall be missed. Slainte to a great soul.

Dang! My brother originally turned me on to comic books thirty years ago by letting me read some of his Spirit reprints. It was truly memorable stuff.

I like this quote from the obituary Bob Andleman wrote: "Will Eisner didn't create Superman, Batman, Spider-Man or even Archie and Jughead. Some comic book fans may scratch their heads when asked to describe his work. But every artist and writer in comic books, as well as graphic artists across the entire spectrum of modern illustration, television and film, owes a debt to him."

Thanks for posting the link, Klaus, the news story really gives a good sense of the history which we lost this week.

A sad day indeed...

I used to love the Spirit - it was a sterling example of a comics style I haven't seen since...

RIP, Mr. E.
