Ran or played in games above level 20 in "X" editions

Which editions have you gone above 20th level in?

  • I've gone above 20th in 3E

    Votes: 52 72.2%
  • I've gone above 20th in 2E

    Votes: 26 36.1%
  • I've gone above 20th in 1E

    Votes: 24 33.3%
  • I've gone above 20th in OD&D or older

    Votes: 13 18.1%

I should have voted 'none of the above' in the poll; I have never played a character through to 20+ in any edition. I did, however, play an epic level 3.5 game.

Beldrachor, my ten thousand year old mummified Emperor, started as a 30th level Wizard/Cleric of terrible power, and progressed through to 34th level by the time the rest of the party died horribly, leaving him the lone survivor.

I played a 1E Ranger from 1st level to 26th level. I still have his character binder. By the time he hit 26th level he owned a Mark V Blaster (from Gamma World), had a mutant Pegasus as a steed, owned two artifacts, had a magic item list that covered two pages, was married to a Sylph and was a part owner of a space station.

You don't even want to know how much damage he could deal to humanoids and giants.

I really need to scan his character sheets...

Only in 3e, 3.5 to be specific. Earlier editions we just never had a single continuous campaign run that long. In 3.5, I've had one (a druid) and another ran to 21st level, but not from 1st, only from 5th, which is pretty close. By the end, both were very high powered, but both were also rather cumbersome in the math by the end. (We were using automated dice rollers for the large amounts of dice thrown. Ever launched a 42d6 disintegrate and had it succeed? :D)

I GMed a 1st Edition game from the end of 1991 right up until before third edition was released. It was a single player game and the character was an 84th level Witch at the end.

Do you mean starting at 1st and going to 20+? Or do you mean any game that ends at 20+? I've played in the latter, but it was a fairly short campaign arc that started at 18th.

I'm unsure what the poll is trying to measure since it lacks the crucial 'never played above level 20'. Level 20 is also somewhat arbitrary since it's the decisive turning point only in 3E.
.

I am trying to measure how many people on ENWorld have played D&D to 20th level and above.

I don't need anyone saying they didn't, if they didn't vote I already know that.

If you have never played to, and above, 20th level how do you know its only arbitrary in 3e?

In early editions, and in 3E, I consider the real turning point when the MAge becomes able to cast Wish and the Cleric can cast Miracle, etc... Thats been lower then 20th level up through 3E.

I had a L28 cleric in a BECXI game waaaaay back in the day when killin stuff for shinies was all we worried about. Other than that, no. Though I did DM AoW to the end. They probably got enough XP to make L21, but we didn't care much at that point, and I regret playing every moment past L14.

But this way you'll only get an absolute number not a percentage. Is that a meaningful number? Or are you comparing the number of votes against something else? Number of ENWorld users?!

Exactly! That's why level 20 is arbitrary. If the level you are interested in is the level at which you've been able to cast wish/miracle then maybe you should have asked for that level.

If these are your criteria it's good you didn't include 4E since it doesn't have wish/miracle.

But, hey, it's your poll :-)
