Ranged AoO

It's why i consider only as AoO worthy the case when you already aim opponent with a weapon (ready). Even a knife will be ok that way.

Only to prevent strange fact; how can you move 60', etc (normal charge) without receiving an arrow, etc, only because you have init ?

Another question: you enter a room with the door covered by readied archers. All the guys covering the door are dumb and unable to launch their arrows or they can strike first ? They are not flat-flooed, they expect fight !

You do what you want in your game, but it's not allowed rules wise.

Actually it's not that strange. I mean your pc starts a mad dash toward the group of kobolds, they are shocked at the action, then nock arrows to bows or aim the crossbow but your pc is zigging and zagging and being rather smart for kobolds know that to shoot and miss is not going to do them any good PLUS it might make this crazy guy notice them and attack them instead of grzurp over there who took your piece of meat last night at dinner. Yeah he should go after him or maybe you'll wait till he's by grzurp then fire and miss the crazy man but hit grzurp!

If they have a readied action they can fire at the first thing that comes thru the door. Or if the pc is surprised and the archers didn't think to ready an action then they could get a surprise round. Just because I'm ready to fight doesn't mean you can't be taken aback by what transpires.

I think this is horribly broken.

Consider the average pc elven archer, Dex of 22 at 8th level. That's +6 attack. Add combat reflexes. Let them threaten with a bow to, what, 20'?

Anyone approaching them takes an AoO. Anyone. If they threaten 20', someone will come into their square. Those are free shots. That's just horribly wrong to me.

Why should an archer get a free shot at you if you imbibe a potion 15' away? No reason.

If you imbibe a potion in front of them, you're distracted, and might get hit.

Threatening at Range is a 30th level ability, under core rules (10th level of an epic prestige class). There's a reason for that. Allowing it as a house rule seems not a good idea, to me.

True! I forgot this rule. It's better than AoO. A readied action seemed to be my answer. You can ready an action even if you just EXCEPT fight ?

Are you flat-footed because you opponent, for example, is at the other side of the door or fully awared? Can you ready an action before most dm "roll initiative" ?

In real life, adrenaline helps but fatigue. In RPG, in theory, players may say they are alert for hours...

The only "fatigue" rule in DD is the barb's after-rage fatigue. Anyone has idea how long you may remain "alert" and "with weapon ready" ? Fortitude roll (endurance applies!) vs ?

10 after 10 first minutes, +1 each extra 10 minutes ? Seems good ? There is an official rule ?

the ELH is not core rules. but i agree with ranged AoO being broken. 's why they didnt do it.

This has nothing to do with Ranged AoO,

but it bugs me and its about another ranged ability

I was reading the Abyssal shark in the Seafarers Handbook
and low and behold the darned creature has a Ranged bite ability how do you get a freaking Ranged bite attack I was just to wierded out

for the topic I think that Ranged Attacks of Opportunity should be allowed but at the cost of an archery feat or something similar

Cover fire
Through practice with your weapon you have come to take advantages over foes who have left themselves open to your fire

prereqs: Bab +5, Dex +13 Weapon Focus (chosen weapon), and precise shot.

Benefits: On taking this feat a character gains an expanded threat range when dealing with attacks of opportunity
This expanded range is roughly half of the weapons first range incriment. For example a character who choses a Longbow as his chosen weapon ( by WoT rules sorry) is 50 ft when 100 ft is its
First range incriment.

Special This feat may be taken multiple times; however each time it is taken it must be for a new weapon

Improved Cover fire: Allows the full range incriment (so in the example above 100 ft of threat zone whe dealing with attacks of opportunity)

Just say that the feat increases the threat range of the character to one half of the largest range incrimant of the best ranged bow, can't remember if its the longbow, or composite longbow so say I think 70ft cut it in half

A 35 ft threat zone which in essence gives the character
Ranged attack of opportunity within 35 ft
I would make it weapon specific as well

Just say that the ranged attack is for the players weapon of choice, and then have a special blurb about the player being able to take the feat multiple times, but each time he takes it, its for a new weapon.

And then if your still not happy create an Improved version which pushes the ranged up to the full increment zone of the chosen weapon
