Bow rangers actually look to be at the top of the damage curve by most people. I'm guessing a well played group may love a rogue more... but the ranger is still pretty good.

Also, remember that the fighter in 3/3.5 and 4e are two completely different beasts. The 4e fighter is more of a specialized tank or 2h weapon swinging person, rather than a super-customizable source of feats.

So, if you want to shoot a bow at people, you take the ranger class. If you want to carve out kidneys, you take a rogue instead.

Don't forget that rangers and warlocks can add damage dice to each and every attack, thanks to Hunter's Quarry and Warlock's Curse.

If by "each and every attack", you mean "once per round", then I'll agree with you. Hunter's Quarry only adds damage once per round (second paragraph of it's description). So even though a number of the ranger archery exploits are two shots, it only adds to one.

A warlock making good use of his warlock's curse, especially at high levels, can really lay down the damage as well. Paragon path powers, feats (like twofold curse), rods of corruption, etc., can let warlocks take full advantage of their curse, which is not limited to extra damage on one target a turn. Instead of a rod of corruption, or in addition to, a wand or two containing wizard's AoE spells makes for very nice group damage.
