As long as your DM adjudicates hiding in combat sensibly (ie - allows it the way the rules state), rogues make perfectly effective ranged combatants.

The rogue in the party I'm running usually finds a bush or something, hunkers down in it, and throws daggers.

I tend to do that to set up my daily (blinding barrage), or if I can't get to a flank. I find that rogue is one of the few classes that blends ranged and melee with ease.
