Ranger - beast movement

I have a rogue/ranger hybrid build. My hybrid talent is Beast Mastery. My question is how does my character and the beast move? Can I only move 1 or the other? From the Martial handbook p.41 'Commanding A Beast Companion', under move action, it says "your beast companion or both of you take a move action". And as far as I can tell the only negative to being a hybrid is the -1 penalty to attack rolls and all defenses. Our DM is convinced that I must choose who I move on my turn and am not able to move both myself and my beast. Could I get a clarification on this please?

You are correct, and your DM is not. A Beast Master Ranger, on their turn, can use a move action to move themselves, their beast, or both.
