Ranger - likes and dislikes?

1) Spontaneous Casting of all Ranger spells. Their selection is small, and terribly weak, and many of the spells not particularly useful.

A short while back I had a thread in House Rules about limiting the number of spells that they could cast.

19 first level Ranger spells in the PHB.

Add 45 if you use the Spell Compendium.

That's 64 first level spells. And you want to let them spontaneously cast???

Thats what we do...

I like the flexibility of fighting styles (though more would be nice, to make other options viable).

I think the d8 HD feels weak.

I like the tons of skill pionts.

I dislike that multiclassing ruins animal companions.

I dislike that it takes forever to get HIPS.

I like favored enemies (weird, huh?)

Something about the 3.5 Ranger that I have taken notice of is that none of my players are playing one. I've been playing D&D for 22 years now and we have always had a ranger in our party. Even in our 3rd edition campaign we had a player who played a ranger and enjoyed it. When we started our 3.5 campaign we began with 12 players and not one plays a ranger. Our party has a swashbuckler and a hexblade and even a bard. We had two fighter/rogues but one switched to scout when Complete Adventurer came out. But out of 12 players not one ranger.
