[Rant] I can't wait for d20 Modern!

First Post
I'm really excited about d20 Modern. I've heard cries that the heroic fantasy d20 system won't successfully cover the modern genre. I've heard naysayers say that trying to cover vehicles and firearms using d20 won't be "realistic". To me that's the whole point. Games like GURPS cover modern firearms and vehicles as realistic as possible, however these games make combat deadly. Deadly and realistic combat is not what I'm wanting. I'd like to see rules that allow characters to emulate James Bond, Rambo, and other action heroes.
As a fan of the Final Fantasy 7 video game, I have been looking to make setting kind of like Final Fantasy 7. (High Tech mixed with monsters and "magic".) I first attempted it with GURPS. However, GURPS didn't allow for the style of play that the video games offered. Final Fantasy games have way over the top combat that's sometimes almost a little silly. I'm hoping d20 Modern rules will allow me to emulate the Final Fantasy video games. Limit Breaks could be taken as feats; d20 Modern will have classes and levels, just like in the video games. Using the same basic system as D&D, I'm hoping that it won't be too hard to convert D&D spells to d20 Modern. Man I can't wait untill November! Thank you WOTC for d20 Modern!

Not too much I can add to that. I want it now.
The sad thing is that since I'm probably the only person in our group that will buy it (maybe our star wars guy will get a copy too), so I'll end up having to DM the game instead of playing it.
I'm waiting for the system that will let me mount guns on my armored Hemi-powered musclecar and scream through traffic knowing what the maximum hardness rating of an object is that I can drive the car through. When it finally buys the farm I'll need to know how many enemies I'll be able to take out with my FNP90 on my way to the ATM, and how long it will take me to hack that ATM so I can afford a new car...

If you want a taste of the d20 modern rules -- although subject to change when it comes out this Fall -- I recommend you try out the following mini-games, coutesy of Polyhedron Magazine ... you know, the one that is now on the back of Dungeon magazine.

Shadow Chasers (Dungeon #91)

[ The above game was missing the Tough Hero -- based on Con -- so it was provided in Dungeon #92. ]

Thunderball Rally (Dungeon #93)

You could actually check out Dragonstar from Fantasy Flight Games for a really good High-Tech/Magic mixture that could work for Final Fantasy 7

What's wrong with Spycraft? It is, after all, James Bond d20.

for me at least, i won't be getting Spycraft because its focus is too narrow. d20 Modern looks to be a bit broader in application, and much better suited to my needs.

I wasn't especially thrilled with Spycraft, and I've spent too much money to buy it now, even if I wanted it. I'm waiting for the real deal.
I have the magazines in question though.
I'm getting ready to run a homebrew D&D campaign so I'm not desperate enough to try to piece together a modern campaign out of what has been shown in the magazines.
If Spycraft is your cup of tea that's great, but at the moment my opinion is, "meh".
;)

Note: I'm sure one could adapt Spycraft into something to serve their purposes, but why? Unless you urgently need a modern setting, why spend the money on it only to turn around and have to change it? Bleah.

That argument could apply to d20 Modern rules. While most of the rules may be well-received, idea of Hero classes based on their relevant abilities may not at first.

Still, November is a looong way from now. Tick-Tock.

As for Spycraft, it's been a long time since we had a decent ultramodern superspy genre RPG.
