What kind of magical stuff did the paladin have? It would have probably been more profitable to cast Fly, take to the air, summon stuff and blast him until he dies, and then sell his stuff far away.
It's usually a good idea to prepare BEFORE the fight starts.
at first I was going to suggest divine intervention but seeing as how this was done for profit- I would say he has to atone himself now...
Did the sorceror raid the paladin's home for anything that can be sold?
