The conventions of the aliens were set and should have been followed. Explain why James Cameron didn't have much trouble following them and made a superior sequel? Because the great directors and writers work within the previous conventions and build upon them, not throw them out the window when it is inconvenient.
Then explain to me alien 3 and 4. I reinstate the SHUT IT.
Sci-Fi and horror may be apples and oranges, but this is definitely Horror Sci-Fi rather than fantasy Sci-fi or space opera sci-fi or any other convention you want to raise.
I didn't notice any glaring inconsistencies with the first movies. In fact, the only thing I can think of you're referring to would be the incubation times and the bullet-time facehuggers, but that's an extremely minor thing.
To me, that IS a glaring inconsistency. The gradual incubation of the alien is part of what's horrifying about it. I agree with Celtavian; just tossing what's been set down before weakens a SF Horror movie. I still think they could have worked within the parameters and still have a good movie. It's not like the pacing for AvP was any great shakes.
Anyway, the whole setup for the duel was about as contrived as most major WWE bouts.
Gave it a five, could have waited till the video. while it did have its moments, a moment does not make a movie. This was just about money, the Alien myth went out the window in 3, predator when every superhero fought them.
7/10. It's worth 5-8 dollars to go see, an hour-and-a-half romp of a flick. Not groundbreaking cinematography or story, but enjoyable enough to put a smile on your face. I will say that this movie should have been made with an "R" rating in mind, to keep in with the flavor and style of the previous movies. I usually am on the prudish side (I winced at the F word in the movie), but I would put that aside in order to maintain consistency of atmosphere in exchange for an R rating. It just ain't A/P without more gore.
I give it a 7. I almost had to be dragged to this movie opening night by my friends after the initial reviews came out, but I'm glad I went. Not a great film, but WAAAY better than I thought it would be. Definitely Paul Anderson's best work (not that that's saying much.)
I was disappointed that 17 year old Stan Winston Predator make-up absolutely *blew away* the look of the new Predators, but the Aliens more than make up for it. They're absolutely stunning! After seeing the horrible foray into CGI in Alien: Resurrection I assumed we'd see more of the same. But the way the aliens behaved and moved was some of the most thrilling yet.
Highlights of the film include:
A single alien taking out two of the three Predators right off the bat in a fantastic opening slugfest
,
Cool new cloaking Predator effects like the blood dripping off the cloaked claws and the Predator who leaps across the hall as a hail of gunfire bounces off his armor and causes his cloak to zap and sparkle
,
and, without question:
the T-Rex sized Queen!
She was badass!
I can't believe its taken 18 years for anyone to revisit the Alien Queen on screen (the stupid birthing scene in A: Resurrection doesn't count and oh what leaps in CGI technology will accomplish! It was a fanboy's dream to see her charging around with her warriors flanking her feet and then later thrashing the rib cage of the whale and the buildings above.
Negatives include:
Poor Predator make-up, strangely bulky Predator armor that made their arms look funny and too short, two distracting bullet-time effects, not enough compelling characters and sufficient scenes to make you care about them before they die.
I think they did well for a PG-13 rating, but for those who complain its not like it isn't pretty much a guarantee that the DVD will have an R or unrated edition.
I don't know how "good" this movie was, but it was hella "fun" in enough places that I was very well entertained. Looking forward to picking up the DVD.
Aliens 3 and 4 don't exist in the minds of most fans of the series. They were poor sequels, much like this movie.
I gave it a 4.
Spoilered commentary below...
The " Minute-Aliens" incubation time was just silly. The Predators showing up on an icy continent was another, but there weren't only inconsistencies with the other movies, it went ahead made itself new ones.
For example, why did the weapons of the Predators in the first fight all melt from acid while fighting the Alien. Then later the 'hero" Predator time and again slices and dices Aliens with no wear or tear on his identical equipment?
Also they make a point that the Predator can see the insides of each person throughout the film, then when he's taken away by dozens of them on the ship, none of them notice?
The characters were all blatant cardboard stereotypes ("look at the photo's of my kids") that you never give a flying-whoop about. (But thankfully they die quickly)
Especially unbelievable was the super-duper-heiroglyph-speed-reader archeologist who seemed to be able to glance around a room and then wax eloquently about the history of the place.
Then he also "scooped" that because the Mayan calendar was base 10 that the maze shifted every ten minutes... ummm minutes are based on 60 seconds how is that have any relation to base 10? You could go on and on...
Other than the quality of the special effects this movie was cheezey, I was half expecting a little Predator smooch session at the end. Seeing the Alien queen run around was probably the highlight though.
Nice review, Kai Lord! I agree with pretty much everything you put down, especially your highlights of the movie.
Oh, another nice touch I liked was
the chestburster at the end that had predator-like physical traits. It almost makes me hope that a sequel is made so that we can see what it looks like full-grown.
I'd also add the
super fast-growing aliens as a low point of the movie,
as it's very inconsistant with the previous Alien films.
I'm excited to see what's on the unrated special edition DVD that will likely be made.
Thanks DJ, yeah I pretty much agree with your assessment as well. The incubation times didn't bother me. Very easy to write off as selective editing. We don't know exactly how many ten minute intervals passed off screen.
I also didn't have a problem with the one Predator's weapons not getting melted by the acid. From what I remember he was particularly fast in slicing the aliens. Kind of like swishing your bare hand through a flame. You do it fast enough you don't get burned.
Of course you can nitpick this movie. You can do the same for Alien, Aliens, and Predator. Look at the scene at the end of Aliens where Ripley is hanging onto the rung in the airlock against the full vacuum of space with an Alien Queen hanging on her ankle. Not only does she shake off the Queen and endure the relentless vacuum, she then climbs out of the airlock without even using her feet!
The battles between the Aliens and Predators were cool. Bam. Mission accomplished. The movie served its purpose. Everything else is gravy. Sure it would have been nice if they nailed everything, and I do believe there are valid things to criticize about the movie, but when there are a surprising number of things the movie did right I really don't see the point in dwelling on the negative.
