Plane Sailing

Astral Admin - Mwahahaha!
So, I've been to see Monsters vs Aliens.

It had better 3D than 'Bolt' - more pervasive and more convincing to my eyes.

The story was fun, but there wasn't any point where I actually laughed out loud (unlike, say, Kung Fu Panda last year).

Overall I'll give it a 6. Fun entertainment, but I won't bother buying it on DVD.

Anyone else?

Took my son to go see it. We didn't see it in 3-D, as I found that distracting in Coraline and he hates wearing the glasses. I thought the movie was decent, but it seemed like more of an action movie than a comedy. There were a couple of good laughs, though.

Took my kids to see it. It was amusing, but nothing too memorable. We also avoided the 3-D screening, as we almost always do. While I disagree with Ebert's ultimate assessment of Monsters vs Aliens, he's dead on with this part:

Roger Ebert said:
3-D is a distraction and an annoyance. Younger moviegoers may think they like it because they've been told to, and picture quality is usually far from their minds. But for anyone who would just like to be left alone to see the darned thing, like me, it's a constant nudge in the ribs saying never mind the story, just see how neat I look.

I thought it was about a 7.5 but I voted 8 because after I left the movie I found myself thinking about all the bad-wrong-fun I cna have with throwing in a 50ft tall woman in my Mutants and Masterminds php game.

Eh...

Every spring and summer, our local movie theater has free weekend matinees of second-run kid and family movies from last year. It's a good way for, as a family, to see some of those movies that we are interested in, but not interested enough to pay full theater price for -- movies like Space Chimps, Madagascar 2, Igor or Open Season.

I wish we had waited until Monsters vs. Aliens had come out as a free matinee. It was okay to watch, but I wish we hadn't paid full price for it.

I thought it was terriffic: 8/10. loses a point for being a tad slow to start and at other times but I thought it was very funny - funniest thing I've seen in quite some time. In fact I'm gonna go see it again with a group of kids in a few minutes.

Yeah, I hear ya when you say they're pushing the 3D. I DON'T think it's going to be the big thing they want it to be. There is simply undeniable loss of brightness and clarity in wearing "sunglasses" that only let in half the light to either eye. It is presently the price to be paid for obtaining the 3D effect - and some people don't like it and/or can't handle it physically for reasons of unalterable human physiology.

It doesn't bother me and I enjoy it - but I'm not keen on seeing EVERY movie from now on (animated or otherwise) in 3D. I don't think Citizen Kane, The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, or Mr. Smith Goes to Washington would have been improved by it. In fact, as the technology currently exists, they would all have been criminally degraded by it. But it doesn't lessen this movie and I doubt I'd enjoy it any less in 2D.

I didn't see it in 3D, but my son and I loved it (he's 4). I thought it had great laughs and very good action. Easily better than Cars and almost as good as Kung Fu Panda.

I gave MvA a "7" for the 3-D version. This was the first ever 3-D I've been to at a theater, so I enjoyed the tricks. I would have voted lower, maybe a "5" if it wasn't for the effects.

Took the family to see the non-3D version of Coraline, and most of us thought it was "ok" but not great.

I didn't see MvA yet, but I have to admit that I'm a sucker for 3D movies. My Bloody Valentine 3D is one of the best horror movies I've seen in years - and I've seen a lot of horror movies.
