I've been reading this book called "War of the Rats" by David L. Robbins. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. It's about the duel between Russian sniper Vasily Zaitsev and German sniper Heinz Thorvald in the ruins of Stalingrad during WWII. This is the same true story on which the movie "Enemy at the Gates" is based, although the book is different from the movie.
Anyway, I started thinking about the possibility of using a war-shattered urban environment like Stalingrad as the basis for a D&D campaign. Has anyone tried anything like this before? I think the ranger and the rogue PrCs for such a setting could be very interesting.
If I'm not mistaken, there was a Forgotten Realms novel in which the characters went to just such a war-torn city. I think it was one of the Alias novels. I've have to dig those out and check.
We ran a campaign one time that involved guerrilla warfare in a large forest, but an urban war setting would be the flip side of that.
Anyone have any ideas?
