Ray of Enfeeblement?

A critical hit from a Ray of Enfeeblement (8th level caster) would cause a 2d6+8 STR penalty, correct?

Edit: i'm an idiot, I meant +8 (ie 2 * +4).

I'm not sure. Critical hits multiple damage, do they multiply penalties? Can you be critically entangled by a tanglefoot bag and take a -8 to dex instead of -4?

I'd probably say yes. If only to reward the 8th level wizard who normally doesn't get to enjoy the excitements of critical hits, unless he is being killed by them that is. ;) Well, 2d6+8 at least, 2d8+10 would be a 10th level wizard, neh?

And you can be critically energy drained which is more a penalty than damage. So probably yes.

Sort of. The energy drain special ability can inflict more negative levels on a crit, but not the spells. Such spells deal additional negative energy damage (though this is explicitly spelled out in T&B for sneak attacks, it isn't for critical hits).

Gray area. If it were a sneak attack, you'd do 1d4 negative levels + sneak attack in negative energy damage. As it's not and it's a critical, again, I'd allow it to apply because the energy drain special ability works in that manner and because it adds excitement to the game.

But no where can I find where that is spelled out. If it requires an attack roll, and can thus auto fail on a 1 even when mathmatically that would hit, then I'm going to give extra awards for a 20. Be that 8 + .5(2d4) negative levels on a critical empowered maximized enervation or 2d4 on a critical vanilla enervation. :)

Uhh... I'm away from my Tome and Blood, but I'm pretty sure it says that a crit doubles negative levels...

Ah, there it is. Just kept missing it. Here's the quote...

"A critical hit with an energy-draining spell inflicts twice the listed amount; for example a critical hit with an enervation spell bestows 2d4 negative levels."
