Okay, so a friend of mine wanted to start a new campaign from the first 1st level. No Dark Sun related PCs are allowed as we are about to start a Dark Sun campaign with another DM soon.
He is allowing most things a few things are out; however, not important enough to gripe about. One requirement is to pick only 1 3rd level magic item to begin our adventure. It must be uniquely tied to the PC story wise.
I came up with an idea. I am going to play a Minotaur Warden. I was looking at the magic items, and nothing really grabbed my attention. I decided to look at Magic Shields because….what the heck right?
He mentioned clues. Undead and lots of water travel. I then saw the floating shield. Hmmm. Then it hit me. I came up with this idea the Minotaur lived on an island as a fisherman/fish monger. In his spare time he shaped surfboards and surfed.
I wrote a back story that included finding a tree, after a storm, that was hit by lightning. It sang to him. (Melora was calling for him) He carved the board and one night dead fish started to wash ashore. Then some undead. He grabbed the big blade he used to cut up the fish (re-flavored long sword) and his new board, skimmed out, and killed one. He then flipped it up into his empty hand and used it for a shield. Bam! Flavor!
Now I want to re-flavor some powers. I want the earth strength build, but I want to make it more sea-strength. (He grandfather is a shaman and taught him harmony between Sea, Air, and Land. Some powers could be volcano like (I know they already have some) Others should be more seaworthy. I have Weight of the Earth changed to Weight of the Sea, Tempest assult as-is (sea stormy already), Roots of Stone as Rip Tide and Winters’ Herald as Ice Floe. I have looked ahead at higher level powers, and they seem to be easily re-flavored.
Is this dumb? Crazy? Stretching it too far? Input is appreciated.
