reach weapon tactics...

Hmmm... actually let me ammend my previous post. Standing up from prone is move-equivalent, so if you moved towards an opponent with a Guisarme, and he tripped you as an AoO, you could then stand up, and combine a 5' step with your stand up from prone action. You still couldn't attack, (you've moved 10', then had to get up and move 5') but you'd be right next to your opponent with the Guisarme.

You can only take a 5' step if you move no actual distance in the round otherwise.

Since you already moved before getting tripped, you may not 5' step after.

Quite. Both Improved trip and Improved Disarm put the opponent in a situation where they must use a move action to recover (picking up their weapon or standing from prone)

This prevents the 5' step. Even if they give up on a weapon dropped they can't 5' step, draw and hit you unless they have Quick Draw

PS Hi Snowdog :)

PPS Smurf, if we're up against the Kytons, I want to swap sides ;)

Not so - Picking up a weapon or standing up is a Move-Equivalent Action, which does not preclude a 5' step.

If you're prone, you can stand as an MEA, 5' step, and make one attack. If you're disarmed, you can pick up your weapon or draw another as an MEA, 5' step, and make one attack.

So if you've moved at ALL during the round, you can't can't combine a 5' step with your MEA like you normally could if you started the round prone?

Makes sense, I think I remember reading the rule where the 5' step only applies if it is your only movement for that turn. Must've forgotten about that one. ;)

However the use of Disarm or Trip does have a quite significant effect on play

You disarm your opponent

His go:
He picks up his weapon, a move-equivalent action which provokes an AOO; he 5' steps forward which provokes an AOO since a 5' step is not his only movement and then get a standard action

You trip your opponent

His go:
He stands up, a move-equivalent action which does not provoke an AOO; he 5' steps forward which provokes an AOO since a 5' step is not his only movement and then get a standard action

So against an opponent whose gameplan is to 5' step in and hit you disarm gives you 2 AOOs and trip gives you one

He picks up his weapon, a move-equivalent action which provokes an AOO; he 5' steps forward which provokes an AOO since a 5' step is not his only movement and then get a standard action

Uh... the 5' step is his only movement. An MEA doesn't count as "moving any actual distance in the round".

And you can only make one AoO against any given opponent in the same round, so even if he did provoke two, you'd still only hit him once.

In the case of Trip, stand from prone, 5' step, attack provokes no AoO at all.

If you're Medium-sized, Monkey Grip the polearm so that when you Quick Draw that emergency weapon, you can still use your polearm. Use a short sword for your emergency weapon.

If you're Large, just wield the polearm in one hand and a longsword in the other.
