REALLY enjoyed the Lord of the Rings musical!

(funny, no tag for theatre!)

I've just got back from watching the Lord of the Rings musical in the London West End, and it was a splendid experience. They did a really good job of capturing the spirit of the story. Quite a lot of story compression as you'd expect to get everything into 2.5 hours, but the only egregarious bit (for me) was the melding of Rohan and Minas Tirith and respective rulers.

There was some really excellent staging and lighting, some great visual effects for the Black riders, for Shelob, for the balrog on the bridge and so forth.

The atmosphere was great too - the speeches stirred me, the pathos of certain scenes caught at my throat, and the screams from some of the girly girls in the audience when the orcs ran amok throughout the audience was excellent :)

I'd certainly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good theatre visit.

Cheers

 Musical?

Interesting. I demand highlights!

The songs were not memorable, but very flavourful - from the hobbit dancing and drinking songs in the prancing pony (a fun little romp) to the stylistic songs of the elves and galadriel (in particular) to the mad lament of gollum and the slightly melancholy song that Sam and Frodo sing as they imagine the stories that might be told.

Basically the songs fitted into the narrative very nicely.
