I've got a really evil mind, but I'm remarkably gentle with my PC's. Well, at least I think I am. Or at least I try to be. My first two campaigns ended really abruptly with disheartening TPK's due to my inexperience. TPK's generally aren't very much fun for anyone.
Various people have said things like this, and it struck me as odd. In a living, breathing campaign world (as opposed to a hack-and-slash world) NPCs want to live just as much as the PCs do. Sometimes (i.e. post-17th level) the NPCs will actually be even more careful with their lives than the PCs, because they don't always have a loyal ally who is going to True Resurrect them if they get in over their heads.
Tome and Blood. Removes all emotional states from the subject, for a reasonable length of time. Will save negates, granted, but ... if you can punch it through, it's a sweet way to drop the FB ... ^_^
SEVERAL of the spellcasters I've built at Exodus over the past year have kept that handy, especially the wizards. I just haven't had occasion to USE it.
