Really silly question about encounter powers

Hiya,

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but I just want to make *absolutely* sure. Re Encounter Powers, I presume that even though you get an additional Encounter Power at, for example, 3rd Level, you are still restricted to using one of these powers in each encounter - i.e. you dont get to use both Encounter Powers just because you now "know" 2 of them!

You can use each encounter power you know. So if you get your second encounter power at 3rd level, you can use both encounter powers in any given encounter. (But you can still use each encounter power only once per encounter.)

Good thing you asked! Being able to use multiple encounter powers is a huge increase in capability!

The PHB makes it really confusing: "An encounter power can be used once per encounter. You need to take a short rest before you can use one again."

I never put much thought into it before, but it really should be worded "before you can use IT again", because the way they have it, it implies that you do only use 1 encounter power/encounter.

BUT in a sidebar on pg 15 it's worded correctly: "You can use encounter powers many times during a day of adventuring, but you have to rest a few minutes between each use, so you can use them each once per encounter."

So that really wasn't a silly question brunswick, considering the two entires on it seem to imply different things.

Thanks for the quick replies - boy, am I sure glad I asked.

The bit on page 54 re "before you can use one again" is what had me confused, as it is worded badly.

Appreciate being pointed towards the bit on page 15, as that makes it much clearer.

I'm not a newb by any means. I've been playing since 89!

My group just made the switch to 4E, and page 54 fooled us too!
It says nothing about using each one, once per encounter.

Oh well that is what 1st level is for. Just went to 2nd in the traditional Keep of the Shadowfell. I think it may be the TOEE for 4E.


Maybe this should be stickied or something!

One benefit to the psionic classes (ardent, battlemind, psion) is they can pound out the same "encounter" power twice or more in an encounter, depending on their power points.
