As a suggestion: Don't worry too much about the big picture history. Pick a place and read the most recent supplement materials on it. You'll get a brief history lesson in that product, most likely. Thumb through the other recent materials and look for it to spawn ideas, but don't try to be a master of everything - there is too much.

Don't forget about 1496(?) DR: Tyranny of Dragons. If the players lose, the Realms are gonna have a really bad day.

Nah that not a proper realms shaking event as it doesn't change the rules of magic or affect the gods - except for one. Beside we both know that the heroes win :)

I believe the year is 1484 and slap bang I the middle of the Sundering. Salvatore mentions it in Rise of the King which I think is set in 1484.

Ehh, true enough! And 1484 you say?

Anyway, have an XP, my friend! :)

The answer depends on how you define "Realms shaking events".
The big three are the 1e-2e, 3e-4e, and 4e-5e transitionary events.

There are also the smaller storylines that have occurred, like the Horde invasion and Tyranny of Dragons that are big events but have far fewer lasting consequences.

I reckon three Realms-shaking events:
1) The Time of Troubles
2) The Spellplague
3) The Sundering

All other big events in FR either fall under the scope of the big three or are not truly 'world-shaking' (for instance, the death of Mystryl and the birth of Mystra were important, but didn't really mess up the world)

I was wondering about the events that redefined the Realms, I know I don't have to know who fought in the Crown wars (unless it have something to do with my adventure). But I consider (now that I have read you) that Time of Troubles, The Spellplague and The Sundering (if I play post 4e) are things I have to know, at least know what happend.
Thanks you all for your time and kindness.
