Recapturing 1st Edition Feelings

but DND, whatever incarnation, is not simple or easy by the rules. I know that some groups made it that way, and power to them. I know that my group was a bunch o' rules lawyers, so we played by the rules, for 1E and 2E and it wasn't an easy game. And I have introduced a dozen or so people to DND. 3E is by far the easiest.

evildmguy, I remember we kind of played a cross between 1E and OD&D (the Red and Blue sets). We ignored some stuff and made up other bits and had great fun doing it all with stories still recounted from long ago days. I want to bend the rules because I like D&D whatever it's form. I've played numerous other systems and enjoyed many of them over the years but always return to the old favourite.

The cartoon is very funny however, and true if I could be back in 1984 there are times when I would, it seemed a nicer world back then.

All this talk about what people miss from the 1st Edition has got me thinking about my own experiences back in the day and I began to seriously think why D&D felt different then mechanics wise and how 3rd Edition differs.

I plan to use Castles and Crusades and break out my 1st edition books. For example, I'll be running a C&C game in the Forgotten Realms (which in 1st edition, is considered the prime and best FR). Im also converting the psionics rules from the 1e PHB to use for C&C.

Yeeesh. My feeling is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. 3.0/3.5 work fine as they are. It sounds like you want a lighter, quicker game. I would recommend Castles & Crusades.

Anyone know if C&C has been released yet or when it will be? It sounds quite interesting although I'm unsure as to whether it moves a bit too far from d20 for my personal tastes.

Biohazard it's not so much an overiding preference for one or the other but a question of what people feel needs doing to accomplish the task. Some days I like extensive rules systems other days I like simple D&D like the old red basic set. The real question to me is if I want the alternatives what needs doing to make them available. Also I don't want to go back and play with the clunky 1E or OD&D rules sets I want to play OD&D d20 with rules like level limits removed.

C&C will be released later this month. The two books released are the Player's Handbook and the Monsters & Treasures book. The boxed set has already been released; that is currently what I have. I plan to use the box set to introduce my nephews to gaming.

So true...so true...and cartoons were so much better too.

Good discussion by the way.

A while back, I posted my proposed changes to the 3e rules over in the rules forum and got flamed for it. Seemed like everyone thought I was gonna sneak into their house, rip out the pages from their books and replace them with my house rules. :heh:

Anyway, my solution to bringing back a quicker, rules light feel, was to bring back old school multiclassing with separate exp charts, lose feats and AOOs. I redesigned most classes to mimic or resemble their 1e counterparts, yet ept the basic d20 mindset. I scaled the attacks back, so only fighter types got extra attacks - the fighter gaining the best rate. These attacks were all at the same base attack, but were staggerred, ala AD&D. I banned several spells and scaled back others to lower the power thresh-hold - no Cat's Grace, GMW, etc.

The fighter btw, had the following abilities that no one else got:

1st level: Weapon Specialization: A fighter gains +1 to hit and +2 to damage with one weapon of his choice.

5th: Weapon Mastery: The fighter gains an additional +1 to attack and damage with his chosen weapon.

9th: High Mastery: The fighter gains an additional +1 to hit and damage with his weapon of choice.

12th: Grand Mastery: The damage dice of the fighter’s weapon of choice increases one step. For example, a broad sword does 2d4 damage, but in the hands of a grandmaster, it woud do 2d6. A weapon with a d12 damage die does 2d8 instead.

15th: 2nd Weapon: The fighter gains a 2nd weapon that he may apply all his specialization to.

18th: 3rd Weapon: The fighter gains a 3rd weapon that he may apply all his specialization to.

Basically, I made my own version of C&C, and have since switched over to C&C entirely, as I am one of the playtesters, though I still prefer the 1e classes, or my homebrew classes.

I'll be using a hybrid once the C&C books hit the shelves. I like the old style rules, but I do like some of the new mechanics, such as grappling, bull's rush, etc. But using all the 3e rules, even just the core books, slows gameplay to a crawl imo.

Don't get me wrong, I'm one of those that waited breathlessly for 3e and even started running games with the rules from Eric's old site. I remember Henry's "C'mon August!", and I couldn't have agreed more. I really liked 3e for about a year or so, but then it suddenly became more of a chore than a game. I've seen a lot of threads lately about 1e or simplifying 3e, and I really think C&C is what a lot of us are looking for. I'm not completely happy with all of C&C, but it's close enough that I can make it the game I want without butchering half the game, which is what I did with 3e.

Same here, except I'll be using lots of B/X/RC D&D stuff as well!

The thing I like about C&C is that it captures the "old school" feel of B/X D&D or 1E AD&D, while using the d20 mechanic, and making it very easy for different groups to add rules as they see fit (skills, psionics, new classes, etc.).
