Recommend a Good 1st Level Game?

I'm set to run a game for a group who haven't gamed in a long time--like 'eight years' long time.
Just set to go through the last couple of years of Dungeon to find a good 1st level game. Any recommendations?

What kind of game? (Ad&d, 3.0, 3.5)

I would recommend a one shot or couple of sessions before trying to start a whole campaigne. Any relatively low level monster bash works best to get folks up to speed quickly.

It'll be 3.5 rules, set in Greyhawk. Yeah, I'm not starting any major campaigns right now, until I can see if their enthusiasm remains high and we can all work out schedules. I'm just looking for a basic good dungeon crawl--something that screams 'Classic D & D' for these old schoolers.

Why not use the first adventure for either the "Age of Worms" -- Whispering Cairn -- or "Shackled City" adventure paths? Both are 3.5, set in Greyhawk, start with a dungeon, and if successful, you have some ready-made adventures you can go right into a campaign with.

I think these are good suggestions. Both are pretty entertaining in and of themselves and if things do take off you have already started them down a level 1 through 20 campaign arc.

I recomend " Mad God´s Key" from Dungeon#114, good stuff for a 1 lvl party.
The adventure is set in the city of Greyhawk with lots of interesting encounters.

Thanks, guys. I'm currently running another party through the Cairn--or 'TPK Alley', as they call it--but I hadn't thought of running the first Shackled City. Hmm. 'Mad God's Key' was also cool. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks for the food for thought.

I'd recommend "Gorgoldand's Gauntlet" -- it appeared in a Dragon annual on CD, and also in a Dungeon magazine (iirc). It's a dungeon crawl with puzzles and traps, with an interesting final boss and a great prize that sets up lots of further adventures.

[spoiler warning]

The "dungeon" is a gauntlet designed by a (good) Gold Dragon ("Gorgoldand"? Get it?) to find worthy adventurers. The prize/treasure, a magic +1 sword, allows the gold dragon to spy on the party and follow their adventures. Presto, built-in deus ex machina.

Take care,

Ragnar

For something a little on the unusual side, your group might enjoy The 11th Hour from Ronin Arts. See my sig for the link. I can't say too much about it and not give the twist away.

This is a good one except for one thing: if I remember correctly it has a trap really early in the adventure that deals con damage that will kill most 1 lvl chars directly. You might want to look at that if running the Gauntlet.
