Recommend a solo adventure game

GFX suggestion: GeForce 8800GT-512MB or GeForce 8600GT or GTS-512MB, if you consider the first too expensive still

Those are available for a reasonable price by now (~$200 for the 8800 and ~$100 for the 8600) and should handle pretty much everything you can buy today, so should be fairly future-proof as well.

EDIT: Of course, you have to find out first, whether your computer has a PCI-E (PCI-Express; the current video card slot technology) video slot or is still AGP only (in that case you need to settle with an older video card, as almost all the newer ones are PCI-E; the Radeon HD 2600 XT is not too old and should be available for around ~$100; I do not know much about it, though, but read that it needs the Omega drivers for ATI cards to run properly).

EDIT²: And while you are at it, maybe also check your RAM. If you have less than 2GB it might be worth a thought to upgrade to 2GB (actually completely replace the existing RAM with 2x1GB kit DDR2-667 or -800 dual channel, depending on what your board supports). It's fairly inexpensive and Vista is pretty RAM-hungry.

Bye

I know you got your game already (and NWN2 is a fine choice), but after your wife finishes it, if she's looking for something else to play, I'd suggest Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It meets all your criteria (you can choose to play light side or dark side, so while you can have a villainous protagonist, you don't have to have one), and it's a flat-out fantastic game - probably my favorite CRPG of the last 5 years. The one caveat is that I don't know how it runs with Vista, so you should probably do a little searching on that subject before picking it up.

Oh, and don't bother with the sequel. Huge disappointment.

Cool. I was kinda looking at that one, too. I may pick it up for later.

For my own enjoyment, does anyone know how the new Shadowrun game is (I don't mind dark and always enjoyed the PnP version)?

That's really unfortunate. I think I'll get Portal, instead. FPS aren't really my schtick, but Portal looks darn addictive.

They turned it into a Capture-The-Flag style FPS.
Oh no, did you have to remind me of that. I was really hooked when I read about a Shadowrun game. But then, I found out it basically had nothing to do with SR except the name! How could they do it? It's nearly as bad as the imagination of Uwe Boll getting the Lord of the Rings license...

*weeps*

Portal is awesome. Ordinarily I wouldn't say a 3-4 hour game is worth $19.99 (though it may be cheaper now - I'm not sure), but for this game, I'll definitely make an exception.

Though I would definately say it is best bundled in the Orange Box, so many good games for the price of one.

Like I said, I'm not big on FPS. You have to go back to the Doom series for me to remember the last time I really enjoyed one.

FWIW, RTS games are pretty much soul-suckingly boring and frustrating to me. I understand I'm the odd one out, here. Just sayin' my tastes aren't always mainstream.

Strangely, though, I loves me some God of War, Soul Reaver, and other games that are pretty much FPS with an out-of-body experience and big swords. *shrug*
