John doesn't particularly look the part of a Paladin, he stands 6ft tall, his skin is weathered and scarred from his rough beginnings, his blonde wavy hair is often matted, he often doesn't bother shaving and he sometimes smells of alcohol and tobacco. He looks, for all intents and purposes like a mercenary.

On the surface, John appears to be no more than a bandit, the identifying marks of his order often concealed by him under his cloak, he goes to the taverns to fit in amongst the drunkards, where he gambles, smokes and drinks, but also mingles. However, he has a presence that draws others to him. Warriors see him. This big solid warrior is probably best noticed by for the surprising amount of kindness and understanding for others. The likelihood of John ever becoming truly successful as a Paladin however may be doubtful. He has many vices and flaws he must overcome.

The person who saved him long ago was a male Paladin of Tritherion named Varka. When John lay in the gutter, dying from alcohol poisoning, the paladin took him back to the room in the Inn he was staying. He treated John with herbalism, fed him and let him stay the night. John woke up in the night and stole from the Varka, taking valuables to gamble off and try to make some money. Particularly successful that night, John found his competition to be sore losers. They pulled daggers on John and surrounded him intending to kill him, but the Varka, without armour or weapon selflessly came to John's rescue, however became badly wounded in the process. John swore to atone that night and followed the noble paladin as a squire, determined to keep his word.
Varka taught John how to be a Paladin as well as how to survive as an adventurer in the lands around the city, how to identify and locate herbs for healing. Eventually his friend was mortally wounded in a terrible battle with a cleric of Luz just a year and a half after John started on the path to becoming a Paladin. John has since not recovered emotionally and has taken again to his old habits drinking and gambling, trying to stick to his newfound paladin ways through vigilantism on the side. He blames himself for Varka's death
John is now a tortured soul, wavering on the path of the Paladin. He is likely to take the Oath of Vengeance, though a twisted part of him wishes vengeance on himself. Nobody is without sin in John's eyes, but unlike many Paladin's who end up taking the Vengeance Oath, John believes, nobody is beyond redemption. Let's hope he sees that in himself in time...
