Another possibility: Perhaps he's doing research for a university, which has contracted with the company to allow him to use their facilities for his study (at significant cost to the school, via grant or something). He is probably still required to pull his weight on ship...but he may not be an Exxon employee...
Which reminds me.
Briefing questions!
1) What's the rule of engagement here? Minimum force? Are civilian casualties a concern (officially)? What about equipment damage?
2) Are there rules on salvage? Treatment of prisoners? Treaties or accords to keep in mind?
3) What's the fate of the Nebula supposed to be? Is it to be set adrift? Scuttled? Are we stealing the cargo? What do we do with the crew?
And finally
...how big's the tactical squad, and what sort of tactics is the commander planning to use? So I can make sure I'll have what I need to play a part.
Are we all in a mercenary unit (and thus know each other), or were we independent contractors who were brought together for this mission?
