I thought of a few more:

The original Human Torch and his sidekick Toro (from the Marvel comic series The Invaders, both were flaming androids)

Not to quibble (okay, I'm quibbling ) Toro was not an android, but rather a human boy who had worked with his parents in the circus as part of a fire-eating act. In the '40s this was considered sufficient explanation for why he could burst into flame & fly like his android idol, the (admittedly poorly named) Human Torch. Eventually Roy Thomas would explain this to modern minds by retconning that Toro had actually been an early mutant, like the Sub-Mariner. So Toro was arguably the first of the X-Men.

An excellent quibble! I didn't know that. (And here I was all proud of myself for having remembered Toro's name in the first place.)
